An expansion plan is in place for the province's only federally-inspected beef and bison processing facility. Portage-Lisgar MP Candice Hoeppner, on behalf of Federal Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz, announced a 310 thousand dollar repayable loan for Winkler Meats on Friday.

President Dickson Gould says the company plans on adding another 2500 square feet to its facility, which will increase capacity by around 20 percent. The federal funding will also be used to install two new smokehouses and upgrade production line equipment.
Gould says Manitoba livestock producers will benefit from the expansion, noting "it's a long-term commitment to the livestock industry."
Winkler Meats is the only federally-inspected beef, bison and elk processing facility in the province, and, along with Maple Leaf and Hytek, one of only three federally-inspected pork processing facilities. A processor must be federally inspected to market its product outside the province.
Expansion is slated to get underway in June with completion planned for this coming fall.
